The ghost of rent-a-bike has come back again to haunt the Margao Municipal Council with Councilor Mahesh Amonkar questioning the silence of the civic body about dozens of rent-a-bikes being parked in the municipal property at the old fish market.

Amonkar has demanded to know why the authorities have failed to initiate action against such rent-a-bikes when they are supposed to park their vehicles at the office of business.

He said the rent-a-bike operators are so emboldened in their operations that they have even set up chairs and tables in the passage of the MMC as part of their business activities.

“How can the operators park their two-wheelers in the old fish market property belonging to the Margao Municipal Council. The old fish market area has been earmarked for the civic officials to park their vehicles, but what we have come across dozens of rent-a-bikes being parked there illegally by the operators,” he said.

Saying he would ask the RTO to seize the bikes, Amonkar urged Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho to direct the RTO inspectors to crack a whip against the operators. After Amonkar raised an uproar over the rent-a-bikes operators setting up tables and chairs in the MMC passage to further their business activities, the MMC authorities later swung into action to seize the chairs and tables.

“Earlier, the rent-a-bike operators were parking their vehicles near the MMC building. Now, they are so emboldened that they are parking their two-wheelers right inside the municipal property,” he added.
