MMC team on job to recover nearly Rs 20 crore arrears

With the outstanding arrears amounting close to Rs 20 crore, Margao Municipal Council officials are bracing up recovery of taxes at the door steps of households and business establishments.

Officials of the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA), executives of a private bank, Margao Municipal Chairperson Lyndon Pereira, Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes, Accounts and Taxation Officer Abhay Rane and others had an interaction with the members of the dedicated team specially constituted for tax recovery.

The team members were imparted training on how to use the POS machines as the squads will be going to the doorsteps of the households and shops to recover the tax arrears.

Margao Municipal Chairperson Lyndon Pereira informed that the private bank has so far provided two POS machines, adding that more machines will be provided to the two squads in due course of time.

“Members of the two teams will go to the individual business establishments to recover trade tax and to the households to recover house tax. We have imparted them training and the two teams were expected to fan to the city tentatively from October 1”, Lyndon added.

Admitting that the outstanding tax arrears have almost touched Rs 20 crore, comprising of house, trade license and municipal rent, the MMC Chairperson said the Civic body would vigorously go after the tax defaulters in the coming days.

IN this respect, he said the Civic body has categorized the tax defaulters on the basis of the amount due to the Civic body, adding that the Municipality will first target the defaulters who owe huge taxes.
