MMC told to ensure cleanliness around transformers

VASCO

Upset over heaps and piles of garbage scattered around transformers at various locations in Vasco, electricity department officials have asked the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to ensure cleanliness failing which electricity staff would find it difficult to access the location during an emergency.

Speaking to reporters, Electricity Department Assistant Engineer Sanjeev Mhalshekar said the department had earlier written to MMC about taking up the cleaning of areas near transformers.

"Today, the areas around transformers at most locations have become garbage dumping sites. Heaps of garbage are found and sometimes people also urinate there making it practically impossible for our staff to attend to an emergency. Sometimes, we cannot take up work and vehicles also cannot be parked to carry out any work," said Mhalshekar.

"In the past, there was a huge fire in the transformer box at the crowded Vasco municipal market. It was basically because an establishment had dumped empty wooden boxes and packaging cartons near the transformer box which caught fire and later spread to the transformer box. This can be dangerous and dry waste should not be allowed to be piled near transformers. I urge the MMC to take up this issue on priority," said Mhalshekar

He said the MMC must take their request seriously and act on the matter.
