“I will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and give him a presentation of the Calangute garbage treatment plant (GTP). Since ‘Swacch Bharat’ is our prime minister’s vision, it will be most appropriate that he inaugurates the GTP. I will invite him to do so,” said Michael Lobo, Calangute MLA, who visited the GTP on Wednesday and was briefed about the trial runs at the site.
He said Goa could help in giving a lead to set up such treatment plants in other states.
Full-fledged operation of the plant is expected to start by end of April. Work on the plant had started in November 2014.
“Garbage is a huge menace along the coastal belt and for me setting up of the garbage treatment plant was one of the top priorities. We had also undertaken a study tour to Europe to see the functioning of modern treatment plants,” the MLA disclosed.
He said the plant which was almost ready will solve the garbage problem in the coastal belt in the North.
“However, for Goa to be a successful garbage free State, we will require at least another two such treatment plants,” he said.
Calangute Zilla Panchayat member Shawn Martins was also present at the treatment plant.
“The garbage treatment plant (GTP) will be a landmark project for the entire country.”
“We will invite people from all over the State to visit the plant to allay their apprehensions about it,” the ZP member said.
“I am sure once people see the plant they will want to build such plants in their areas,” he added.
The fully automated plant is expected to handle 100 tonnes of garbage a day.
