The Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) has written to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, demanding an inquiry into the Mormugao Municipal Council’s (MMC) waiver of construction license fees of around Rs 16 lakh to a school in Vasco.
Speaking to reporters, GSM Youth President Nitin Phaldessai said municipal councils cannot waive off construction license fees from schools without the government’s approval and demanded an inquiry into the matter.
“The MMC chief officer had no right to decide on public money while the council is struggling for finance. We strongly oppose such appeasement politics and we strongly accuse MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes for this situation.”
“Other schools newly constructed in Mormugao have not been given such privilege treatment. This special treatment is given only to a selected school to appease the minority,” said Phaldesai.
“We request the government to recover the construction license fees along with the occupancy fee as the state is reeling under acute revenue shortage. Proper inquiry should be conducted against Fernandes who has taken a unilateral decision to waive off the construction license fee, under the pretext of a resolution by the MMC in 2014, without taking government approval,” Phaldesai added.
The GSM also submitted the memorandum to MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes, with a copy to Urban Development Minister Milind Naik.
