The monsoon, which took just three days to race from Sri Lanka to Karwar between June 7 and 10 has been stuck in Karwar since Friday and has failed to progress further into Goa. The northern limit of the monsoon continues to be at Karwar, Gadag and Ongole. Speaking to The Goan, officials from the Met department said that the conditions associated with the monsoon have not been met and the current rains are still pre-monsoon showers . “Both the wind direction and the wind speed are not consistent with that of the monsoon conditions. The conditions for the declaration of the onset of the monsoon have not been met yet,” the Met office has said. Nonetheless, Goa continues to receive pre-monsoon showers with Canacona receiving 7 cms of rain over the last 24 hours and other major towns of the State including Panaji, Mapusa, Margao and Sanguem receiving around 4 cms of rain each. The Met office has said that the onset of the monsoon has been delayed by another two-three days on account of a very feeble off shore trough, which if it were to be stronger would have encouraged the onset of the monsoon. The State will continue to receive moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers at most places over the next few days.
