More statues confront 'a statue'

Fresh set of private members resolutions to be tabled in the upcoming session of the Goa Legislative Assembly

PANAJI: In an apparent bid to dilute the demand for the installation of a life-sized statue of Goa’s first opposition leader alongside Goa’s first chief minister in the assembly complex, a fresh set of private members resolutions is to be tabled in the upcoming session of the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar has informed the Legislature Secretariat of his intention to move resolution to have a statue of Shivaji in the assembly complex while the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party’s central committee which met on Tuesday decided that they would seek the installation of the statues of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr Tristão Bragança Cunha within the same Secretariat.
This comes after BJP MLA Michael Lobo and lone NCP MLA Churchill Alemão have both informed that they would be moving resolutions to install a statue of Dr Jack de Sequeira alongside that of Dayanand Bandodkar within the Assembly Complex.
MGP president Pandurang “Deepak” Dhavalikar, while speaking at a press conference informed that the resolution would be moved by MGP legislator Deepak Prabhu Pauskar.
PWD Minister Ramkrishna “Sudin” Dhavalikar who was present for the meeting said that leaders have sprung up out of nowhere and are making “unhistorical” demands.
“There are leaders who were once ‘nobodies’ have today become ‘leaders’ and are making demands. What they are speaking is not based on history and has no significance. They should research before making any statements,” Dhavalikar said.
“We are definitely for the preservation Goenkarponn, but we must believe that we are Indians first and bring all Goans together and take everybody along,” Dhavalikar said.
The MGP central committee also moved a separate resolution that all national and district roads be named after freedom fighters without taking any names.
The budget session of the assembly will begin on February 19 and will continue until March 22 while the last date to submit private members resolutions is February 8.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress which had announced that it would move a resolution to have a statue of Dr Jack de Sequeira installed at the assembly complex has yet to submit their resolution.
Dr Ketan Bhatikar the physiotherapist who had contested the Panaji assembly constituency on the ticket of the Goa Suraksha Manch has joined the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party as a member.
