Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Deepak Naik along with Vasco Traffic Cell PI Sudesh Narvekar and Councillors on Wednesday inspected the parking area outside the Council building amid plans to convert it into a pay-parking zone.
During the inspection, Naik sought suggestions from PI Narvekar on the proposed pay-parking and to ease parking problems in the port town. PI Narvekar said the Council should pass a resolution and submit it to the South Goa Collector to issue a notification, and later proceed with pay-parking plans.
Speaking to the media, Naik said the port town was facing an acute parking problem for four-wheelers, and to ease the problem, the Council thought to introduce pay-parking in front of MMC building in the city.
“Cars are parked on the road in front of the MMC building, and we want to convert one of the roads near MMC building into a pay-parking zone on a trial basis to solve parking woes,” said Naik.
“Most of the parking space is being used by people who park their cars the entire day and go to work in other parts of the State, thereby depriving others of parking their vehicles who come for marketing,” he added.
“If this pay-parking initiative becomes a success, then MMC will replicate the same system at other places where vehicles are just parked for the whole day,” said Naik.
Naik urged the citizens and car owners who park their cars the whole day to co-operate with the Council in solve parking problems affecting the city.
Later in the afternoon, Naik along with the officials of Goa State Urban Development Authority inspected the Baina fish market, which is currently in a dilapidated condition.
While elaborating, Naik recalled that in his manifesto of the Council election he had assured his ward members that he would provide them with a new and hygienic fish market at Baina.
“Plans are already drawn and GSUDA officials have inspected the market to avoid any problems,” he said.
Speaking to reporters, GSUDA officials said a part of the land belonged to the government, and the other portion was owned by the Council.
“We have to ascertain the exact area and after demarcating the necessary space from the road, the plan will be executed,” informed an official.
Naik said the market will be ground-plus one and the ground floor will be allotted for the fish market, two flour mills and a mutton shop, while the first floor will be allotted for the vegetable market.
