On the other hand, caterers appeared a worried lot, with the beef crisis coming during peak new year and the wedding season. Restaurant owners echoed similar sentiments as they demanded resumptionof beef supply to the state.
Jackrice Bakery - the much sought after fast-food joint, patronized by Saxttikars over the years has perhaps for the first time in years experienced a shortage of beef patties during the last three days, thanks to the ongoing strike by beef traders.
Attempts by the bakery to switch on to chicken and prawns have not found favour with the customers, who throng Jackrice as early as eight in the morning everyday. Owner Joaquim Fernanded told The Goan that hundreds of customers have returned home disappointed with beef patties and burgers off the plate. "We are helpless since we cannot satisfy the demand of our customers. Nearly 75 per cent of our average daily sale is beef patties and beef burgers. We tried to manufacture additional chicken and prawns patties," but in vain. Our customers frequent our shop only to have the beef patties," he said.
Many other fast food outlets across Salcete had no option but to switch over to chicken and prawns patties, but in vain.
In the meantime, caterers have launched a tirade against the MLAs for remaining mute spectators to the entire episode and the government failing to make available beef in the state. Anthony Pinto of Pinto caterers demanded to know whether the MLAs have gone out of station since nothing has been heard from them on the beef crisis.
"The government cannot dictate terms on what cooks in people's kitchen. What is happening is really bad. We are helpless. Unlike chicken and mutton, beef is a common man's food. Any decision to include an additional chicken or mutton item on the menu will only increase the rate," Anthony said.
Cavelossim-based owner of La Q'sine Dixon Vaz said the beef shortage during the last four days had a bearing on the catering and tourism industries. "We feel helpless when customers ask for beef items. This cannot go on in a tourist state like Goa," Dixon asserted, while demanding an immediate solution to
the issue.
