MAPUSA:
A mother and her teenage daughter from Nadora sustained serious injuries when a car rammed into their two-wheeler in Colvale on Tuesday evening.
The accident happened around 7.30 pm as the victims, Zarina D’Souza (43) and her daughter Larissa D’Souza (13) were travelling from Colvale to Nadora on their scooter.
The car, reportedly speeding, was coming from the Revora side in the opposite direction.
The vehicle, bearing registration number GA03-AF-3830, struck the two-wheeler at Tar in Colvale.
The impact of the collision flung both the rider and pillion onto the road, while their scooter became lodged under the car’s front portion.
Eyewitnesses stated that the car's occupants attempted to flee the scene. However, locals apprehended one of them, thrashed him and handed him over to the police, while the other managed to escape.
The injured mother and daughter were rushed to North District Hospital, where they remain admitted for treatment.
Colvale police confirmed that the car driver, identified as Akash Lingudkar (23), a resident of Madel-Tivim, was taken into custody.
Police suspect he was under the influence of alcohol and conducted a medical test, with results pending.
A case has been registered against Lingudkar for rash and negligent driving and further investigation is underway.
