Motorists and pedestrians faced the brunt when thick black smoke emanating from a fire which engulfed the fields in Taleigao made breathing and visibility difficult on Friday morning.
The cause of the fire is not yet known but it took more than an hour of fire-fighting and use of as many as three fire-tenders for the personnel of the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) to eventually douse the flames.
Motorists travelling on two-wheelers were affected the most near the Model’s Legacy condominium as the fire spread across the vast expanse of paddy fields fuelled by dry stubble. Vegetation in the field and some trees along the periphery of the fields were burnt down to ashes by the fire.
Meanwhile, according to the F&ES, around the same time its personnel rushed to a site near the multi-level parking edifice at Patto to attend to spillage of oil following an accident there. There were calls attended to by F&ES of dry grass catching fire at Bambolim where the new Nursing College has come up and also in fields down South in Velsao.
