In an agonising revelation, it has come to light that Naveen S G, a 21-year-old fourth-year medical student from Karnataka who was killed in Ukraine on Tuesday, had a choice to leave Ukraine, but the brave lad stayed back to bring home juniors who were holed up in a bunker.
Naveen’s elder brother has how appealed to the government to first rescue students stuck in Ukraine, before thinking about bringing back the body of his brother.
According to reports, Naveen had stepped out of the bunker to buy groceries for those holed up in the bunker.
However, he became the first Indian casualty in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“One group left on Monday. But Naveen suggested that the others wait so that we could take the juniors along, too, as they had been in Ukraine for less than a year. It was his idea to leave Kharkiv on Wednesday morning,” a final-year student told a section of media persons.
Meanwhile, Harsha SG, elder brother of Naveen SG, appealed to authorities to save the stranded students first.
“My brother will never come back, but please save those who are alive,” said Harsha SG requested the government.
“The government should give preference to evacuate Indian students stranded in Ukraine before bringing back the body of my brother.”
