The Gram Sabha of Cansaulim panchayat on Sunday elected the new Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) during a meeting attended by the Sarpanch and panch members of Cansaulim panchayat.
Speaking to reporters, Cansaulim Sarpanch Savio Pereira said the gram sabha was convened to constitute a new BMC committee and elect the chairman and committee members.
“We have already elected a new BMC and Sibel Almeida has been elected as Chairperson of the BMC. We want to ensure that we conserve our rich biodiversity and save the village for future generations,” said Pereira.
Newly elected BMC Chairperson Sibel Almeida said she would work in close coordination with the panch members for the benefit of the village.
“We have a lot of things to look into, especially along the coastline where we have the sand dunes and other aspects. I will take all the members in confidence and I assure to do what is best for the entire village,” said Almeida.
BMC member Larry Baretto said the flora and fauna of the village had to be protected.
“We have to ensure that all water bodies and the channels are cleaned and desilted so that we can restore our age-old traditional drainage system which is not functioning properly,” said Baretto.
