Describing the work on the new bus stand in Mapusa as ill-conceived and unplanned, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said the entire project is doomed to fail and public funds will go down the drain.
According to NCP General Secretary Sanjay Barde, the plan of fitting interlocking pavers on the floor was doomed to fail as it won’t be able to withstand the weight of the heavy vehicles.
“The soling of the floor with stones has not been done as per specifications and this will definitely lead to depressions and thereby lead to loosening of the pavers. It would have been better if the entire floor was concretised first and then intall it with pavers. We have brought this to the attention of the senior officials of the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (GSIDC),” Barde said.
The NCP general secretary submitted a memorandum to GSIDC stating that as per the current work process that was going on at the site, the Mapusa bus stand project would be a “total failure”.
“We have seen the condition of the pavers fixed at the Mapusa taxi stand which has come out and the same condition is expected to take place at this bus stand when heavy vehicles begin to move on it,” Barde said.
He said the government had acquired around 22,500 sq mt of land for the purpose of the bus-stand and 60 percent of the area had been converted as commercial.
“Initially, the entire bus stand project was conceived at a cost of Rs 235 crore. But the BJP-led government is spending just Rs 3.2 crore to give Mapxekars a makeshift bus stand. Citizens of Mapusa deserve better,” he said and compared the new bus stand Mapusa to bus stands in Nipani and Azra in Maharashtra.
He said the bus stands of Valpoi and Pernem were far better compared to the one that is being built for Mapusa.
He also said the compound wall of the bus stand was another fraud on the people as it was constructed without concrete columns and would collapse.
