In a bid to strengthen solid waste management infrastructure in the city, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has proposed setting up a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) on 400 sq. m at the Cunchelim Waste Plant under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan 2.0.
The proposal comes as the existing MRF is overloaded with waste. The Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) has issued a tender for the proposed facility at an estimated cost of Rs 57.61 lakh.
The existing MRF at Cunchelim is equipped with a conveyor belt and baling machine, a bio-methanation plant with a capacity of 5 tonnes per day (TPD) for wet waste, an incinerator with a capacity of 1.5 TPD and a weighbridge.
However, the increase in waste generation and the closure of the waste disposal site on the Assagao plateau have put considerable pressure on the existing facility.
Municipal officials said the MRF currently has 10-12 tonnes of recyclable waste, exceeding its handling capacity.
As a result, the lack of space and infrastructure is affecting the smooth and systematic operation of waste segregation, sorting, baling and storage of recyclable waste.
“The MMC sent a letter to GSUDA requesting it to take up the construction of the proposed 400 sq. m MRF shed under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan 2.0,” an official said.
“The proposed MRF facility will strengthen our waste management infrastructure and help in better management of dry waste collected within the municipal limits.”
Apart from the new MRF, the MMC has also proposed setting up a composting unit at the Solid Waste Management (SWM) site at Cunchelim to process wet waste at an estimated cost of Rs 30.27 lakh.
The proposal also includes developing the premises of the bio-methanation plant and constructing a leachate tank to collect leachate generated at the SWM site.
