Efforts by Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) to get the shopkeepers to occupy the new shops in the municipal building have failed and the shop continue to remain unused for about three years.
The council's move to organise the weekly baazar on Saturday instead of Wednesday has also been unsuccessful.
According to SMC Chairperson Quiroz Cruz, the shop owners are unhappy with the space in the shops and claimed that the rent is quite high as compared to the earlier rent.
“The new shops in the municipal council premises were promised to the shop owners, who had shops in the old municipal building,” said Cruz.
“After construction of the new council administrative building, the shop owners were not very happy with the space in the new shops. They claimed that the rent for the new shops was also quite high, compared to rent paid in previous years. Hence, the shop owners have not occupied the shops,” he added.
When asked on the move to shift the weekly bazaar day from Wednesday to Saturday, Cruz admitted that the move had failed at the last moment.
“Some shop vendors from Karwar area have decided to stay in Canacona and then proceed to Curchorem on Sunday. “So we decided to keep the bazaar day on Wednesday,” the chairpserson added.
He informed that officials from GSUDA had taken measurements to build a shed for vendors, who sell vegetables, fish, etc. “I am pursuing the matter,” he added.
