The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has clarified that it had not granted permission to Goa Shipyard limited (GSL) to undertake any kinds of piling works.
The MMC’s clarification runs contrary to the GSL’s claims that the construction activity has been granted all statutory clearances and permission from authorities.
The GSL has stated that construction is underway for a MCMV command, control and design office building is being undertaken as part of defence ministry’s approved modernisation plans for strategic project of Indian Navy.
MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes informed reporters that several residents from around the GSL area had complained to him that houses and buildings in the vicinity were vibrating when piling work were being undertaken at GSL.
“I want to state that the no permission of any sort has been granted to GSL by MMC to carry out sheet piling activity. The GSL has taken permission for development of its building for defence purpose and it was granted before I took charge in MMC.”
“After residents from areas around GSL had complained, I had taken a hearing and had stopped GSL work and also told them to undertake repairs works of the neighbouring houses, which they claimed to have done.”
“I have only granted GSL permission to construct vertical support as designed by NBCC which certifies structural stability. I have not granted any sheet piling permission to GSL,” clarified Fernandes.
