What has added to the problem of stench and filth is the absence of heavy rains during the last few days. The stagnant water is now playing host to maggots and litter all around the area. In fact, vendors and merchants have been literally praying for heavy showers to save them from a massive problem of hygiene, hoping that the rain gods may help wash and clean up the market of the stench. The SGPDA is adopting the hear no evil and see no evil attitude.
President of the wholesale fish market association, M Ibrahim told the media that the situation has turned from bad to worse in the last couple of days. “Unbearable stench emanates from the market and the stagnant water is home to maggots. Neither the contractor nor the SGPDA officials have worked out any solution, leaving the fish merchants and vendors to fend for themselves,” he said. Ibrahim warned that the wholesalers will have no option but to shut down the market for two days to draw attention of the government and the SGPDA to the menace. “A delegation of the wholesale fish merchants is first meeting the SGPDA authorities and will then decide when to
shut down the market.”
Replying to a question, he pointed out that the vehicles bringing fish from outside the state are ready to pay extra fees to the SGPDA sopo contractor, but the authorities should ensure provision of basic amenities, including a concrete carpet in the market to prevent water-logging.
