For commuters, life is set to become easier. A group of final year student under the guidance of Goa IT Professionals (GITP) led by Chaitanya Malik has unveiled a project where commuters can access public transport timings on Google maps.
Anyone with a smartphone will now be able to see time-tables of services offered by Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd (KTCL) or River Navigation Department's ferry services.
Time-tables, routes and boarding points of these agencies will be available on Google and can be accessed at http://bit.do/mygoa or maps.google.com or through the Google Maps mobile application.
So far, working together with KTCL and RND, the students have published timings for 90 bus routes of the currently existing 300 as well as all ferry routes in the State. The remaining data is expected to be published over the next two months.
According to GITP, the aim of promoting such a project was to encourage people to trust and rely on public transport. “With the convenience of knowing bus and ferry timings, the project encourages citizens to opt for public transport over personal vehicles for their daily commute, thereby reducing congestion on roads,” said a representative of the organisation.
GITP cited this as an example of partnership between the government, professionals and students. They have also called for more such partnerships especially from professionals in various engineering fields, “to contribute to society by applying their knowledge and experience.”
