MARGAO
The Almighty God and now the sacred coconut has come back to haunt Congress-turned-BJP MLA Digambar Kamat and the BJP-backed Margao group of councillors.
Stung by the defeat in the election for the Margao Municipal Chairperson’s post, the party-backed City Fathers were all ferried to the Zambaulim temple on Friday evening after returning home from Panaji after an audience with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and party leaders.
At the Zambaulim Temple, the councillors are reportedly asked to swear that they had voted in favour of party candidate Damu Shirodkar. It could not be ascertained whether all the party-backed councillors had taken the oath on the sacred coconut or not.
The exercise, sources said, did not go down well with a couple of councillors, who in private questioned the leaders for asking them to take the oath on the coconut, when they had in their ranks a couple of councillors belonging to the minority community.
After the exercise, sources said, the group along with the MLA had pav bajji at the adjoining tea stall before returning back to Margao.
