The sudden surge in supply of onion in the APMC onion wholesale market has not only affected the prices of onion but also put onion farmers in north Karnataka in a quandary.
This has resulted in increase in supplies to Goa as more than 100 tempo loads of onion were sent to Goa on Wednesday.
According to wholesale traders in the APMC market, more than 400 tempo loads of onion arrived in the APMC market on Wednesday. This led to heavy bargaining resulting in reduction in the onion prices.
According to traders, the wholesale rates of onion varied from Rs 15 to Rs 40 a kilo, depending upon the quality and size.
Traders said that the sudden surge in supply was due to the weekly closure day in Hubballi wholesale market, because of which onion loads from Soudatti and Bagalkote headed for Belagavi.
However, another reason for the surge in supplies was the rising fear among onion farmers of onion stocks getting spoilt due to heavy cyclonic rains that have continued lashing the north Karnataka region including Belagavi.
“Moreover, farmers in north Karnataka region will not be able to stock the onion further as after a couple of weeks onion from Maharashtra is expected to hit Belagavi market.
Customers could now heave a sigh of relief as the prices of onion have started receding gradually and this downward trend is expected to continue for next couple of weeks, if one goes by the trend of supplies from Maharashtra and north Karnataka.
