The Margao Municipal Council has directed the Osia Commercial Complex to either stop the discharge of sewage water or face penalty and even disconnection of water supply.
Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Rohit Kadam on Monday served a notice on the Osia Commercial Complex management by issuing directions under section 197 read with section 224 of the Goa Municipalities Act, 1968, and under section 41 of the Goa Public Health Act, 1985.
The Goan had last week highlighted how visitors to the Osia complex, housing government offices such as the RTO, SGPDA, TCP and Excise, have been facing a harrowing time due to the discharge of sewage and wastewater in the complex.
“On the inspection of the site carried out at Osia Commercial Arcade Building (A) situated at Near KTC Bus Stand, Margao-Goa by the sanitary inspector of this council it is noticed that there is overflowing of sewage/wastewater from septic tanks/soak pit of the said building and the wastewater gets stagnant in the vicinity. It is further noticed stagnation of the dirty wastewater emits a foul smell and has become an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes and may lead to dangerous diseases like malaria, dengue, and filaria”, the Chief Officer stated, adding that stagnation has become a source nuisance and health hazard to the neighbouring residents of the locality in particular and to the public in general.
While directing the management to stop the discharge of the sewage waters under Section 197 & 224 of The Goa Municipalities Act 1968 and under section 41 of The Goa Public Health Act 1985, the Chief Officer has threatened to impose a penalty of Rs 5000 for diverting/discharge of wastewater from the septic tank/soak pit in the surrounding and in the vicinity, and for the creation of public nuisance.
