Over 800 untrained primary teachers begin ‘education’

PANAJI
Though Goa is considered to have achieved great feats in the education sector, there are over 800 untrained in-service teachers at primary level.
These teachers have now enrolled for the online Bachelor of Elementary Education (B El Ed) course on the SWAYAM portal. Interestingly, over 80 per cent of these teachers are teaching in recognised unaided primary schools.
Speaking to The Goan Everyday, State Coordinator Sylvia Fernandes informed, "In all, 869 untrained primary teachers have enrolled
for the B El Ed course, of which 443 are in North Goa and 426 in South Goa. They have to complete the course within two years and the first semester examination for them will be held on February 26, 27 and 28."
Following directives from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), State DoE had asked aided and recognised unaided primary schools in the State to get their untrained in-service teachers enrolled on SWAYAM portal for completing the two-year D El Ed course. This would be the last opportunity to complete their education for holding their jobs as teachers. As far as the training to teachers is concerned, it would be provided by National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) through the Online Distance Learning (ODL) Mode through their specially designed portal named SWAYAM.
In all, there are eight study centres, four in each district, created for the benefit of these teachers. These centres will facilitate personal contact programme and practical activities. The study centres in North Goa have been set up at DIET, Porvorim; SCERT, Porvorim, Vidya Prabodhini College, Porvorim; Shree Vetaal Institute of Education and Training, Colvale. For teachers in South Goa, the centres have been set up at Nirmala Institute of Education, Panaji; PES College of Education, Ponda; GVM College of Education, Ponda and Blessed Joseph Vaz Institute, Sancoale.
"Almost 100 teachers have been have been assigned per study centre. We have appointed study centre coordinators, workshop coordinators, master trainers and resource persons at every study centre", she informed.
