PERNEM
The movement against PDAs is spreading to Pernem, with the Pernem Block Congress opposing the Mopa PDA for the proposed international airport at Mopa and nearby areas, claiming that it would encourage casinos in the area.
“We are firmly against PDA and casinos in Mopa and its surrounding areas. All party leaders and social activists will oppose this move together,” said Pernem Block Congress President Umesh Talavnekar.
“Small businesses in Pernem taluka are under threat, issues of infrastructure and employment are not yet resolved, land affected people from Mopa have not got justice nor were they shifted into new houses after their old houses were demolished,” he added.
“The government has failed to provide 24-hour water supply to Pernem taluka, but is now trying to bring Mopa and surrounding areas into the PDA even before providing water, electricity and other infrastructure facilities in the area.”
“The PDA will also give open invitation to gambling activities in Pernem taluka and hence, the government should rethink about the inclusion of Mopa in the PDA. Else, we will hold a mass public protest on the roads,” threatened Talavnekar.
“We are not opposed to good projects but the State government should not bring Mopa area under PDA,” he added.
