Police await nod to file chargesheet

Cyber Crime unit of Goa Police is awaiting the government’s nod to file a chargesheet against Devu Chodankar, a shipbuilding engineer who was booked in March 2014, for posting comments against the then Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP Narendra Modi in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.
Sources from the cyber crime police confirmed that the investigation in the matter has been concluded and that the chargesheet is likely to be filed under Section 153-A and Section 295-A of Indian Penal Code against Chodankar for promotion of enmity between groups in the society thereby prejudicing harmony and for malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. “Government sanction is needed to file a chargesheet under these sections,” the source informed.
Chodankar was initially booked by the crime branch under Sections 153 A and 295 A of IPC, besides Section 125 of Representation of People Act and Section 66(A) of Information Technology Act 2000 and was later transferred to the cyber crime police for investigation.
Chodankar’s comments were deemed as inflammatory remarks which threatened to add fuel to the raging Lok Sabha election campaigns. The FB posts warned a certain section of the society against voting for the BJP and for Modi while stating that the group could lose their identity if the BJP assumed power at the Centre. Chodankar had used the term ‘holocaust’ while predicting the post-polls scenario.
A complaint was thereafter filed against him by industrialist Atul Pai Kane.
