Thirty-five foreign nationals were among around 200 riders and drivers booked for various traffic violations in Mandrem on Thursday, as Goa Police have revived enforcement drive against the backdrop of rising accidents in the State.
A joint team of the Traffic Police headed by SP Bossuet Silva and DySP (North) Sidhant Shirodkar; Pernem police and Mopa Traffic Cell conducted a day-long drive, which will be followed in Panaji on Friday.
“The drive will be ongoing. The joint enforcement will be carried out at least three times a week and assistance from Robot Vehicles and Pink Force will be also sought. Special emphasis is laid on violations having a direct bearing on road accidents and fatalities,” a senior officer said.
Among the total cases booked on Thursday, majority were fined for riding without helmets and driving without seatbelts.
The department has revived its drive to curtail accidents and fatalities. The State recorded around 50 deaths and over 400 accidents from January 1, 2023 till date prompting the government to review the road safety measures.
The enforcement drive will be conducted in the largely excavated Panaji city and its outskirts on Friday across four major places near multi-level car parking, four pillar junction, Grand Hyatt junction and neura underpass junction.
In continuation with the photography drive initiated by Goa Police, more violators were booked in Mapusa sub division on Thursday.
As per SDPO Mapusa Jivba Dalvi around 70 people were booked for violations on Thursday in Mapusa, Colvale and Anjuna area. Their photographs have been clicked and challans will be issued for their violation.
A total of 450 violators have been booked in last three days.
