Politicos took a break on Friday as they descended on Fatorda’s turf to reach out to the people as Sao Joao festivities reverberated across the constituency coinciding with the traditional festival.

If Independent MLA Vijai Sardesai hopped from one ward to another with his councilors in tow to participate in the festivities, the Fatorda Congress leadership did not lag behind. Goa Pradesh Congress president Luizinho Faleiro and former South Goa MP and Fatorda Congress coordinator, Franciso Sardinha, AICC secretary Girish Chodankar, Ethel Lobo took time off from their engagements to be with the party block members comprising of president Joseph Silva, Piedade Norohna, Camilo Barretto, Avinash Tavares and revellers at a swimming pool to participate in the festivities.

The Luizinho-Sardinha duo was attired in the traditional Sao Joao 'copels', as they made a fervent plea to the revellers and party workers to maintain the unity and happiness. In his brief address, Faleiro wished the revellers peace, joy, success and happiness, while taking the opportunity to pat block president Joseph Silva and his team for organizing the Sao Joao Fatorda bash. He appealed to the workers to extend support to the block for the benefit of the people of Fatorda.

Francisco Sardinah appreciated the enthusiasm displayed by the block by organizing the celebrations, saying “these celebrations help bring people together. Please enjoy yourselves”

The Congress president and the former MP, who had left no stone unturned to strengthen the Congress block over the last one year, did not speak anything about politics, but sources in the party said the very presence of Luizinho, Sardinha and Girish and members of the block will help boost the morale of the workers and supporters ahead of the 2017 Assembly election.

Vijai Sardesai, on the other hand, made a plea to the people to preserve the age old Sao Joao tradition. He said all wells in the constituency will be cleaned up before the next Sao Joao festival, while disclosing plans to showcase Fatorda’s unique Sao Joao festivities across the State after 2017 election.

PANAJI Prominent Indian Origin Member of Parliament in the UK Keith Vaz has expressed his disappointment with the verdict, but has refused to speculate on the fate of Goan or other immigrants in the UK. “The issue of EU citizens remaining in the UK is a matter for the negotiation between Britain and the EU.
