Speaking to The Goan, Saldanha said such a decision was taken at a meeting with government officials, including South Goa Collector Swapnil Naik, Mormugao Deputy Collector Gaurish Sankwalkar, Deputy Captain of Captain of Ports and Arihant’s contractor, at her office in Cansaulim on Wednesday.
“It looks like the the salvage operation is a trial-and-error affair. The contractor has not been able to do much to pull the vessel ashore. On Thursday, I am told that a JCB would be used to pull the vessel,” Saldanha said and added that the government was doing its best to remove the pontoon.
Saldanha, however, warned that if the contractor fails to meet the June 2 deadline, then the government would step in and take over the salvage operations, but at the owner will have to bear the cost of
the operation.
