Describing the much-awaited Porvorim elevated corridor as one of the “landmark” infrastructure projects delivered by the BJP-led government, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat said the six-lane corridor would not only ease one of Goa’s biggest traffic bottlenecks but also give a major boost to the State’s economy.
Kamat said the project, along with the new Zuari bridge, represented a “revolution” in Goa’s transport infrastructure and credited Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, other ministers, local MLA Joshua D’Souza and the PWD machinery for ensuring its completion.
“After the new Zuari bridge, this is one of the landmark infrastructure projects built by the BJP government. This bridge is a collective effort of the Chief Minister, Minister Rohan, MLA Joshua and others who provided all support to us,” Kamat said.
He particularly lauded the PWD engineering team for working round the clock to complete the project.
“Our PWD engineers, right from the Chief Engineer to the AE and JE, have done tremendous work, working overnight. I am really grateful to them,” he said.
Kamat also thanked
contractor RRSM Infra Pvt Ltd for completing the project much ahead of its
original December 2026 schedule.
The 5.15-km elevated corridor, constructed along NH-66, is expected to transform traffic movement through Porvorim, one of the busiest stretches connecting North and South Goa.
Kamat said the strategic importance of the corridor went beyond traffic decongestion, given the heavy movement of tourists and vehicles towards North Goa.
“Porvorim is a link between North and South and one of the important links. North Goa is full of tourists and there is a lot of traffic flow resulting in congestion. This flyover will not just help smooth traffic flow but also benefit the State economy. The corridor is going to be a boon to the economy of Goa,” he said.
According to Kamat, surveys indicate that nearly 80,000 to one lakh vehicles are likely to use the elevated corridor every day.
“This is a revolution of the transport system, or rather a revolution of the State with infrastructure, be it this or the Zuari bridge,” he said.
Kamat said the Chief Minister had specifically asked him to personally monitor major infrastructure projects and fast-track their execution after he took charge as PWD Minister.
The project was sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 641.46 crore and subsequently awarded for Rs 364.68 crore.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate the elevated corridor from the Majestic side at 6 pm on September 9. The corridor will be opened to vehicular traffic from 4 pm on
September 11.
