Residents in Porvorim have been hit by an acute water shortage and are struggling to procure water from other sources.
The water treatment plant at Porvorim has been shutdown since October 10 as Tillari authorities have stopped raw water supply to Porvorim due to annual repair and maintenance of the Tillari dam.
Water from the Assnora Treatment plant is being supplied to residents of Porvorim on alternate days, but most parts of Porvorim plateau do not receive water on alternate days.
To make matters worse, the PWD does not have sufficient water tankers to supply water to the people who do not receive water, forcing many people hire private water tankers at a cost of Rs 1,300 per tanker.
“Everybody can’t afford to pay this hefty amount for private water tankers and we have to depend on PWD water tankers,” complained a resident.
Some are now planning a morcha at the PWD office and have also requested Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte to look into the matter and resolve this issue once for all.
When contacted, PWD Assistant Engineer Dattaram Raikar said the water requirement of Porvorim plateau alone is 10 MLD.
“A 15MLD water treatment plant has been constructed at Porvorim. However, less water is presently being received from the Assnora treatment plant and that too, at very low pressure,” said Raikar.
“The underground water tank of 3,000 cubic meters at PDA colony used to get filled within 1 hour previously but nowadays it takes three-and-half hours to get filled up. So one can imagine the present water pressure.”
Responding to complaints about a shortage of PWD tankers, Raikar said the PWD has five water tankers in Porvorim and water is being supplied regularly to those in need of water.
