Having cut-off power supply to the Mapusa flower market on Friday on account of outstanding power bills, the electricity department reconnected power supply on Monday.
But what is unusual is that the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) claims to have paid the electricity bill through the RTGS system on Friday, and has expressed displeasure over the manner in which the electricity department disconnected the power connection to the Mapusa flower market.
According to sources, the council had paid the electricity bill for May and June, amounting to about Rs 30,000, through the online RTGS facility on July 4, and had cleared the bill before the due date of July 10.
“Even after paying the bill and that too, before the due date, the electricity department had cut off power supply to the flower market. Due to this irresponsible action of the electricity department, about 30 vendors, consisting of flower sellers, fish sellers, sugarcane sellers, and tailors, in the flower market had to suffer from lack of power supply for three days,” said a source.
At present, the electricity department permits only one month of arrears and then starts taking action to disconnect electricity supply to consumers without giving any prior notice, if the arrears are not cleared.
