Activists from Mercy For Animals India Foundation staged a striking protest outside the Goa Marriott hotel, highlighting Marriott International’s failure to meet its global pledge to source 100% cage-free eggs by the end of 2025. Demonstrators, blindfolded and dressed in bathrobes, stood beside volunteers posing as hens confined in battery cages, surrounded by blood-stained egg crates. Placards reading “Marriott, Uphold Your Promise: Go Cage-Free” and “Marriott Is Failing on Their Cage-Free Commitment” underscored the message.
The organisation noted that more than 40 crore hens in India remain trapped in battery cages due to broken commitments by international hotel chains. “Marriott had 17 years to fulfil its commitment but hasn’t reported any progress in India,” said Kushal Samaddar, organising coordinator at Mercy For Animals India Foundation. “With just 30 days left in 2025, Marriott remains silent despite its vast resources.”
Marriott had vowed in 2018 to shift to a 100% cage-free egg supply across its 9,100 properties worldwide by 2025. Yet, with no progress reported across its 158 hotels in India and no roadmap for the region, the company faces growing criticism. Mercy For Animals is intensifying global pressure to hold Marriott accountable.
