PWD minister must direct DBL to clear drains: MLA

Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha has appealed to PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar to direct DBL, the company constructing the new Zuari Bridge, to urgently clear the drains to prevent flooding at Santrant in Cortalim.

Saldanha was speaking to reporters after inspecting the flooded areas of Santrant in Cortalim in the presence of Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira.

The Vailankani Chapel and several houses have been flooded as rainwater entered houses due to the blocked drains.

"With two days of heavy rains, water has been flowing on the roads and into houses in the area. There is an outlet for water which is clogged by mud. The workers had to clear the opening but since there are some high tension wires, it cannot be done.”

“As a result, rainwater is now flowing into the chapel and houses. It is very sad that people are suffering as a result of this situation.”

“On the other side, water is gushing down and all drains are filled with silt. Nobody is bothered to remove the silt, due of which the water has entered into houses," said Saldanha.

Claiming that people in the area have been suffering for the last four years due to flooding, the Cortalim MLA said she had spoken to a DBL official and the PWD chief engineer to expedite works to clear the drains.

"I request PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar to issue the necessary directives to ensure that manpower is available for this work. I think DBL should also deploy manpower to resolve these issues because people have lost their patience and have even stopped traffic in the evening,” said Saldanha.
