VASCO: Responding swiftly to concerns over lack of illumination at the railway footbridge, the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) inspected the footbridge and assured to provide proper lighting at the site.
When contacted, MPT Chairman I Jeyakumar said he was made aware of the problem on Friday and promised to direct the Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) to immediately take action and restore the lighting of the railway footbridge.
"It is our responsibility and we will put new bulbs, if the footbridge has proper power supply. If the wiring is not there or if power supply has been disrupted, we will install solar panel lights on the foot bridge as permanent fixtures and get the foot bridge illuminated immediately," assured Jeyakumar.
A visit to the railway footbridge later in the day revealed that engineers at MPT's CME, civil department and electrical section had already begun inspecting the footbridge.
"Gammon India is constructing a flyover on the 4-lane highway near the footbridge and the digging of soil seems to be the basic reason why power supply to the footbridge has been disrupted," explained an MPT officer at the site.
"We have been instructed by the MPT Chairman and CME to find an alternate source of power supply on top priority and we will soon restore power supply and get the bridge illuminated," the officer added.
