Rains flood Mopa footbridge, 10 families cut-off from village

Rains flood Mopa footbridge, 10 families cut-off from village

PERNEM
Ten families residing at Kadashi have been cut-off from Mopa village after a footbridge constructed for them has been inundated following heavy rains in the area.

Students in this area have not gone to school since Monday and in the absence of a safer route to cross the river, the residents are reluctant to leave their homes.

Emergency services are yet to reach these families and internet services in the area have also been disrupted.

There are 10 students in these 10 families who attend higher secondary schools in Pernem, but ever since the river began to overflow on Monday, the footbridge has gone under water and it is difficult to cross the bridge.

“No student has been able to attend classes since Monday. The internet service is not working, and even mobiles and landlines have stopped working. At night, wild bison roam in the area. There is power outage in our area and so, it is difficult to go out at night,” said a student, Meghna Umesh Lad, who lives in the area.

These 10 families had faced a similar situation two years ago and at that time, the emergency services were called to evacuate the locals to safer areas.

The locals claimed the foot bridge is low and goes underwater every time there is excessive rain.
