Rains hamper repair on potholed stretch

CANACONA

Repairs to the dilapidated section of the NH-66 highway at Nagarcem-Canacona had to be abandoned midway, after rains lashed parts of Canacona taluka on Friday evening.

Taking advantage of a halt in monsoon rains, the PWD (highway) division on Thursday began work to repair a 500-metre stretch of the dilapidated NH-66 highway at Nagorcem. After levelling the road, the PWD contractor partly began to tar the road and by Friday afternoon, had covered nearly half of the potholed road.

While work was underway, heavy rains forced workers to abandon the work on Friday evening. Vehicles, however, continued to ply on the highway and potholes began to re-appear on the road.

It may be recalled activists under the banner of ‘Swabhimani Canconkars’ had threatened a protest if the dilapidated road was not taken up for repairs by October 1, after subjecting the Canacona PWD engineer and road contractor to a bumpy ride in an ambulance on the potholed road in an unusual protest.

According to PWD sources, the repair work will resume on Saturday, provided rains do not further hamper the work.
