As forecast earlier, Goa continued to be lashed by heavy rains for a third day on Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to re-issue its ‘Orange’ alert and warn of heavy showers at isolated places for another 24 hours.
The IMD said, extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over both of Goa’s districts as the SW monsoon flow is strengthening.
In the capital city of Panaji, overnight rains inundated some of its low-lying areas particularly in Mala and some of its main city roats like the 18th June Road and the MG Road. Impact on day to day life however was minimal as Thursday was a public holiday.
In Bhatulem, KTC bus-stand area and EDC Patto Plazza besides the Campal area too water-logging of roads was a common sight.
Meanwhile, the beleaguered Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL), went into damage control mode after freshly laid roads caved in at some locales in the city, warning of repetition for such incidents.
It released phone numbers of two nodal officers -- Sameeuddin Sheikh “ 8956225888, Silvano Sequeira-9764504914 -- and urged citizens to report to the duo incidents they come across of “settlement of roads” so remedial measures can be initiated immediately.
Meanwhile, reports of trees being uprooted from different parts of the State have trickled in. A huge tree collapsed near the Mahalaxmi temple in the capital city while in Mapusa, the retaining wall of St Britto’s High School also collapsed again this year.
Pernem recorded eight centimeters of rain while Ponda, Sanguem and Margao received seven centimeters in the last 24-hours.
