PORVORIM
Bollywood actor Prateik Babbar, son of Rajya Sabha member and film icon Raj Babbar, was booked under the Motor Vehicle Act on charges of rash and negligent driving leading to a clash with a scooter rider in Porvorim.
The police, however, did not register an FIR as the two parties reached a compromise.
According to reports, Paulo Correia of Merces filed a complaint stating that the incident took place as he was proceeding from Mapusa towards St Cruz on his scooter (GA-07-AA-3829) on Thursday evening.
On reaching the slope at Damian de Goa at Alto-Porvorim, Correia claimed that Babbar, who was driving a car (MH-02-EZ-1590) suddenly took a U-turn and as a result, he crashed his scooter into Babbar’s car.
Since Babbar did not stop his car, Correia claimed to have flung his helmet in the direction of the car. Babbar alighted from the car and entered into confrontation with him, assaulting him in the process, Correia added.
Porvorim police later attached both vehicles and booked an offence under the MV act against Babbar on charges of rash and negligent driving.
Later speaking to media persons, Correia said the police had sent him for a medical check up after he had filed the complaint. “Babbar was also referred for a medical check up, but he refused. Though I was assaulted, the police did not register an FIR against Babbar,” said Correira.
Taking up the matter, Vasco-based activist Tara Kerkar criticised Porvorim police for not registering an FIR against Babbar. “If the police wanted, they could have insisted on a medical test for Babbar. This rule is applicable for all and there can’t be exceptions,” said Kerkar.
Later on Thursday afternoon, Porvorim police said Babbar had agreed to compromise and assured to pay
compensation to the complainant. “A necessary affidavit in this regard will be submitted to the police. Hence, the issue of filing of FIR does not arise,” said a source at the Porvorim police station.
