The ruling panel had a smooth sailing as its candidate Rajesh Vernekar was elected unopposed as deputy sarpanch of Chimbel at a special meeting in the panchayat office on Wednesday.
The opposition panel was expected to field its candidate for the post, but did not do so as sources informed that efforts to muster support from one of the ruling panchas failed.
All the 11 panchas, 6 from ruling and 5 from opposition, were present for the meeting which was presided by presiding officer and EORE Ravindra Naik. Panchayat secretary Ashish Naik assisted in the election process.
Speaking to The Goan after his election, Vernekar said the first priority of the ruling panel is to find out a solution to the garbage problem which is plaguing the village.
Meanwhile, with the deputy sarpanch in place, sarpanch Manisha Chopdekar is likely to step down to pave way for another woman panch to occupy the top spot.
When questioned over the issue, sarpanch Chopdekar admitted that there was an understanding that the post would be equally shared among the women panchas of the ruling panel. “But my term is not over yet,” she added.
