The Malmaruti police in Belagavi have seized 800 boxes of illicit liquor worth around Rs 30 lakh during a raid conducted on Saturday morning.

The illicit liquor, packed in 800 boxes and lacking any legal documentation, was being transported from Goa to Maharashtra.

Addressing a news conference at the Belagavi Police Commissionerate on Saturday afternoon, Belagavi City Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase said the Malmaruti police had received reliable information early in the morning about the illegal transportation of a large consignment of liquor, not manufactured in Karnataka, being transported without any valid documents.

Acting on the tip-off, Police Inspector B R Gaddekar and his team intercepted a truck near Srinagar Garden in the city and conducted a search.

During the inspection, the police found the entire truck loaded with liquor. The illicit liquor, packed in 800 boxes and lacking any legal documentation, was being transported from Goa to Maharashtra.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the seized liquor amounted to approximately 7,000 litres, with an estimated market value ranging between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh or even more. The truck driver has been arrested in connection with the case. Samples of the seized liquor will be sent to a laboratory for examination to determine where it was manufactured and from where it originated.

Commissioner Borase also announced that Inspector Gaddekar and his team would be rewarded with a cash prize in recognition of their commendable work in seizing such a large quantity of illegal liquor.

Commissioner Borase stated that this was the third major police operation carried out in the past month based on credible information.

He has appealed to the public to immediately inform the police if they notice any illegal activities or suspicious movements in their surroundings, so that timely action can be taken to curb such activities.
