The Margao Municipal Council on Monday witnessed a serpentine queue of women waiting to lay their hands on the income certification to avail benefits of the Griha Aadhar scheme.
MMC officials attributed the queue of women to the decision taken by the government empowering the local bodies, including the municipalities, to issue the income certificates, which were hitherto issued by the taluka mamlatdar.
Gearing up for the challenge as the queues for the income certificates are expected to swell in the coming days, with the government setting October 31 as the deadline to submit the same, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said the civic body will take all possible steps to ensure that the applicants get the income certificates well on time.
“I have already told our officials and staff to gear up for the challenge. If required, we will open a second counter to streamline the receipt of applications and issue the income certificates,” he added.
The Chief Officer explained that income certificates for the Griha Aadhar applications were being issued by the taluka mamlatdars over the years, adding that the government had not entrusted the responsibility to the civic bodies.
The MMC indeed witnessed a huge queue of women applicants for the income certificates taking the MMC staff and citizens by surprise.
