A dangerous stretch at Queeny Nagar in Velsao has finally received much-needed safety measures, bringing relief to residents who had been worried about a rise in accidents during ongoing highway works.

Acting quickly on concerns raised by villagers, the Vasco Traffic Cell, led by PI Alvito Rodrigues, along with highway authorities, installed speed breakers at the accident-prone junction within two days. They also added road separators to better manage two-way traffic and deployed personnel at the spot to monitor movement and prevent mishaps.

The swift response was appreciated by locals, who came together on Sunday to felicitate the officials for their timely action.

The demand for safety measures was strongly raised by villagers along with panch member Jim D’Souza and social worker Roquezinho D’Souza. They had highlighted the growing risk caused by speeding vehicles and poor traffic control at the junction. The situation had worsened due to ongoing highway works, making immediate action necessary.

Residents said the new measures have already made a clear difference, with vehicles slowing down and traffic becoming more organised. “We were living in constant fear due to frequent accidents. The quick action by the traffic police has brought great relief,” said Jim D’Souza, adding that the steps will help prevent further mishaps.

As a gesture of thanks, villagers felicitated officials of the Vasco Traffic Cell and highway authorities, acknowledging the proactive role of PI Alvito Rodrigues.

In a unique community effort, social worker Roquezinho D’Souza has also offered to provide daily water, soft drinks and refreshments to traffic police personnel stationed at the junction.

“We wanted to support the officials in our own way. This is a small token of appreciation for their efforts,” he said, adding that the initiative is meant to help personnel working long hours to manage traffic and ensure safety.

Residents said this joint effort by the public and authorities has not only improved safety but also strengthened trust, ensuring quicker action on such issues in the future.
