Salcete residents left to deal with trail of destruction

MARGAO

Incessant rains accompanied by gusty winds left a trail of destruction in Salcete on Sunday. A number of trees were uprooted in Velim and in Navelim villages, even as a mud house collapsed at Kharebandh early Sunday morning.

The cyclonic winds on early Sunday morning destroyed rooftops of houses, besides damaging electric poles and conductors in the village.

A number of trees also came crashing down in the village. Velim MLA Cruz Silva later deployed machinery to clear the road blockades in the village.

At Navelim, gusty winds along with rain witnessed tree falls in Dongorim and surrounding areas early Sunday morning. Locals called upon Navelim MLA Uhas Tuenkar for assistance as electric poles and conductors were snapped by the winds.

Tuenkar, along with Dongorim panch member Damodar Chawan, supervised the operation by the power department to restore electricity in the area.

Meanwhile, Margao Fire Officer Gill D’Sa informed that the fire brigade had to attend to a number of fire and rescue calls following the uprooting of trees in Salcete taluka.

Gill informed that a portion of a mud house collapsed at Khareband-Margao on Sunday. No one, however, was injured in the incident.
