The 'Sanhgatit Sanguem', a social organisation based in Sanguem, on Thursday slammed Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for his remarks against Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar, stating they had been politically motivated only to finish his political image in Sanguem constituency.

“Gaonkar has clarified with documentary proof of the work he had done for getting the proposed IIT in Sanguem. Two of the three plots identified and proposed by Gaonkar were government lands while one belonged to a society. Where is the question of any commission or private interest in the proposed land as claimed by Sawant,” questioned Sarvesh Naik, while addressing a news conference in Sanguem.

“It was only with the sole intention of development and to fulfil aspirations of locals hoping to get job at the IIT that Gaonkar was backing to get the project in Sanguem.”

Another speaker, Sudin Kurdikar, accused opposition political leaders in Sanguem of being jealous of the development work by Gaonkar in the constituency in recent times.

“Sawant’s unwarranted allegations against Gaonkar are only aimed at politically finishing Gaonkar. However, people from Sanguem know Gaonkar fairly well and that is the reason why he was chosen by people in the last assembly elections against party candidates.”

Kurdikar and other speakers vowed to rally behind Gaonkar, after claiming that he is a sincere person and had proved his credentials beyond any doubt at the press conference in Panjim on October 21.

Speakers at the news conference, however, raised concerns over the future of development works which Gaonkar had undertaken in the recent times and voiced doubts over the government’s support to Gaonkar in solving of the long-pending grievances of Selaulim Evacuees besides other projects like the Sanguem PHC building premises, the Ravindra Bhavan and Dando Bridge.
