OLD GOA

Highlighting the importance of speaking in Konkani, former president of Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) Vincy Quadros has stated that it will help in preserving our identity as Goans.

Quadros was speaking at a Konkani Quiz contest organized by Mandur Church for the children of catechism in its parish.

Speaking on the occasion, Quadros said, “Konkani is getting marginalised today and English is given prominence which doesn’t augur well for Konkani. We may save everything, be it our environment, our culture, but if we do not save our language Konkani then our identity as Goans will be lost.”

“So, I urge everybody to use Konkani in their day-to-day life and promote it through the organization of such quizzes,” he said and added that if anybody wants help in promoting the Konkani language, he is always willing to help.

On his part, Gulab’s Editor Fausto V da Costa urged Goans to make English as a language to earn their bread and butter, and to always keep Konkani as the language of the heart.

“But today, it is observed that the trend has reversed. We have made Konkani as a language to earn bread and butter, and English as the language of the heart,” Costa lamented.

“If Konkani is lost, then we Goans will also be lost,” he further warned.

Earlier, Quadros conducted the quiz for the junior category while Costa conducted the quiz for the senior category. They also praised parish priest of Mandur church Fr Manuel Gomes for promoting Konkani through his works.

Prizes to the winning groups were given at the hands of Quadros and Costa while Fr Gomes gave mementoes to both Quadros and Costa for giving their invaluable time. Fr Gomes also congratulated the parish catechists for preparing the catechism students for the quiz.
