NCP State President and former minister Jose Philip D'Souza suffered a major setback when his wife and former councillor, Neny D’Souza, lost in Ward 17, which had been represented by his brother, late Pascoal D’Souza, before he succumbed to Covid last year.
Not only did Neny lost the elections, she was placed third in the election.
There were 10 candidates contesting in Ward 17 and the winning candidate and outgoing councillor Fredrick Henriques polled 901 votes, followed by Parshuram Madar (456) and Neny Dsouza (385) votes.
Late Pascoal had been councillor of Ward 17 for 10 years after winning the ward on two consecutive occasions and his death last year had left the ward without a councillor for the last few months.
Though there was a hype that the ward, considered to be the stronghold of Jose Philip D'Souza’s family, would be retained by Neny, the BJP-backed outgoing councillor Fredrick Henriques won the ward with a considerable margin.
Despite the huge rallies and cake-cutting ceremonies to mark the birthday of late Pascoal D’Souza, Neny came in the third place, with a local resident, Parshuram Madar, managing to secure the second place in the ward.
Meanwhile, the NCP panel of six candidates failed to open its account in the elections and all the candidates filed by NCP failed to win.
