The South Goa Advocates Association (SGAA) has urged the Union Minister of State for Law, SP Singh Baghel to allot working space and funds for the upgradation of the library.
During the Minister’s interaction with the Judges, staff and the Bar Association when Baghel visited the South Goa district Court building, the South South Goa Advocates Association handed over a memorandum to the Law Minister highlighting the need for space for the lawyers and a well-equipped library.
Drawing the attention of the Minister to the fact that the Association of lawyers predominantly practicing in the District of South Goa, comprises of more than 1,000 lawyers across six talukas, the Association president Prasad Naik pointed out that it intends to set up a ungraded library for the use of lawyers in the State of Goa. The library facility can also be made available to the student community and for research-oriented work, he said.
He added: “At present, we operate from a small room, which has been allotted to the Association, in the old trial court building, located at Margao-Goa. Since the room is housed in the Court building, the said room can be kept open only during court working hours. The room is also having a leakage problem and cannot accommodate more than about 20 lawyers.”
He said the Association and the lawyers fraternity would remain indebted if the Minister could impress upon the Goa government to allot sufficient space to our Association, from which space, the lawyers could operate and set up a well-equipped library with adequate facility for e-content.
“The library could be of immense use to young lawyers, who during the early stages, find it difficult to set up their own office. This library could also be used by law students and NGO’s for research work. The Association can also undertake various legal aid work, if independent space is made available to the organisation,” Adv Prasad said.
