Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said the government has already received the file related to the probe into last year’s stampede at the Dev Lairai Zatra in Shirgao and assured that “due action” will be taken.

Six devotees had lost their lives in the tragic incident, which raised serious concerns about administrative failure and crowd management at religious gatherings in Goa.

Responding to a query at the post-Cabinet press conference, Sawant acknowledged the need for stronger administrative practices to prevent similar tragedies.

He said the government has already received proposals for infrastructure upgrades and road expansion aimed at improving crowd management at major religious venues.

“Work is underway to strengthen facilities and ensure better safety for devotees,” he said.

Spiritual tourism push

Sawant also used the occasion to make a case for promoting “Spiritual Tourism” in the State, linking it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Goa on Friday.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to unveil a 77-foot bronze statue of Lord Ram at the Partagali Math in Canacona, an event that Sawant described as a milestone in showcasing Goa’s spiritual heritage.

“Goa is globally known for its beaches and nightlife, but our temples, mutts, and religious festivals are equally significant. We want to highlight this dimension of Goa to the world,” Sawant remarked.

He added that the government is working to integrate spiritual tourism into its broader development agenda, with a focus on improving infrastructure, accessibility, and safety at religious sites.

With spiritual tourism positioned as a new pillar of Goa’s identity, Sawant said the government is committed to ensuring that religious gatherings are celebrated with both reverence and safety.
