Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has made remarkable progress in the field of renewable energy. In 2014, India had only 2.8 GW of solar power capacity, but last month, the country surpassed the 100 GW mark—an extraordinary 35-fold increase, stated Union Minister Shripad Naik on Tuesday.
Union Minister Shripad Naik was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the National Training Program at IIT Delhi. Present on the dais were: Prof. Sreekrishnan, Deputy Director, IIT Delhi, Dr. Sangeeta Kasture, Advisor & Scientist ‘G’, MNRE, Prof. Vivek Kumar, Head, Centre for Rural Development & Technology, IIT Delhi, Prof. Vijay, Coordinator, BDTC, Centre for Rural Development & Technology, IIT Delhi, IIT Delhi and the Biogas Development and Training Centre (BDTC) jointly organised this initiative.
In 2014, India's renewable energy capacity stood at 75.52 GW, which has now increased to 220 GW—a nearly 300% growth. This program, focused on biogas production, power generation, and compressed biogas (CBG) technology, will play a crucial role in India’s renewable energy transition, Naik further stated.
Along with the expansion of solar and wind energy, it is essential to boost the bioenergy sector. Naik emphasised that bio-energy is a key pillar of India’s renewable energy strategy. Not only is it a clean energy source, but it also aids in waste management, rural empowerment, and reducing energy imports. Utilising agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, and livestock manure can help create an environmentally sustainable circular economy.
Congratulating IIT Delhi, BDTC, researchers, and all stakeholders, Naik said that India is entering a new era in bio-energy. This training program is not just about technical knowledge but is also a step toward transforming the energy sector. By working together, we can maximise the impact of bio-energy.
On this occasion, Union Minister Shripad Naik called for collective efforts in building a clean and green India.
