A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court for killing his mother in order to borrow money for alcohol.

Additional Sessions Court Judge of Mapusa, Vijaya Pol pronounced the judgement on Thursday after convicting the man in the assault and death case.

The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 5000 on the convict and in failure to pay the penalty to undergo additional imprisonment of six months.

According to prosecution, the accused used to constantly beat his mother and borrow money from her for his drinks.

The accused claimed that someone may have entered through the back door and hit his mother from behind.

Strongly opposing the contention of the accused, Assistant Public Prosecutor, Sunita Nagvenkar said the back door was locked.

The witnesses also testified that the accused on several occasions hit his mother and took money from her for alcohol.

It may be recalled that the accused, Ravi Shirodkar (45) had fatally assaulted his mother on February 24, 2013, at Savo-vaddo, Oxell, Siolim.

He hit his mother, Nali Shirodkar (74) on her head with a wooden plank resulting in her instantaneous death, Anjuna Police reported in their investigation in the case.
